Lindanne Phillips is an artist who excels in multi-media art with drawing, painting, pottery/ sculpture, and jewelry. In her drawing she excels in tonal scales of a limited and textural patterns within a two-dimensional framework. Viewing her dynamic time-travel and patterned works of art is an exciting experience.

Phillips’ use of both figurative shapes and geometric patterns evoke the merger of past to present. Influenced by her mother, Annie Phillips (a quilt designer), Phillips is able to incorporate a craft with fine art. The patterns intertwine and hold the works together while the figures continue their story.

As a portrait artist with a twist, Phillips pursues relationships with various patterns. Her choices of patterns and subject matter are innovative and complex. Patterns undulate, fading into the past and then rushing strong to the foreground. She mixes figures and patterns to trigger memories of the past to the present. She says,

“I am my past and the past is the reason for my future.”

There is energy to her visual interpretation of the subjects, bringing questions about the subject matter to the viewer’s mind. Who were they? What did they do? Where are they from? Her art is a time capsule, bursting with nostalgia, learning from the past to gain insight for the future.

As a child, she was told by her parents she could do anything she wanted to. That was the key to her creativity. Lindanne Phillips, a retired art teacher, revived her MAE from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She is also a recipient of various awards from Birmingham Art Association and a featured artist in the Birmingham Art Journal and Drapery Interiors Magazine.

Phillips’ work has been displayed in the Birmingham Art Association Gallery, and at the Cabawah Art Association. She continues to teach pottery and portrait work in her studio.
